The Miller group implemented “lab safety field days” in 2017. These events, meant to evoke the field days of grade school, are designed to offer hands-on practice with various techniques. Safety field day activities usually start with a discussion of the technique and associated risks, followed by a demo from a senior researcher and opportunities for individuals to perform the procedure themselves. Activities/demos are proposed ahead of time, and then voted on as a group with selected activities ranging from proper use of swivel frits or Soxhlet extractors to handling gas cylinders and regulators.
