SOCs

Safe Operating Cards (SOCs) are a convenient way to keep track of what is going on in the lab. When laminated and posted around the lab, the cards are reusable using dry erase markers. Common usage includes: unattended or overnight reactions, communication of hazardous reactions to other researchers, explanation of process conditions (e.g. lights off).

In the Miller group, we have standard SOCs and “High Hazard Experiment” SOCs that feature bolder colors to ensure everyone in the vicinity is aware. These are experiments at high pressure, using particularly toxic materials, or other cases where special attention might be needed. Such experiments also require careful planning ahead to ensure there are appropriate safety controls in place to safely perform the experiment.

Here are some example SOCs. Feel free to use one of these or design your own!
